One typical rule of thumb in journalism is to not run the same company too often. The thinking is, there are so many incredible designers out there, why focus on just one? While I generally subscribe to this precept, every once in a while I stumble across an exception to the rule. So that’s why I’m sharing these literary pendants from Out of Print — I can’t stop thinking about them, so they definitely fit the bill of this department.
My No. 1 pick comes from one of my all-time favorite books, To Kill a Mockingbird. The Scout and Boo pendant is pulled right from Scout’s precious collection of sundries. Like all the necklaces in this range, it’s solid brass with 14-kt. gold plating, lead-free and features an adjustable 18-inch chain with 3″ extender. $30.
And here is an authentic (as opposed to phony) version of Holden’s beloved hunting cap from The Catcher in the Rye, in a one-size-fits-all, red-enameled version no less. $30.
Also not to be missed is this clever selection inspired by The Great Gatsby. Give the gift of real estate, either East or West Egg, to your favorite star-crossed lover — each half even reads “Daisy” or “Jay” on back — and keep part of it for yourself. $34.Finally, a word that should be used more frequently, from 1984, a book that cannot be read enough. $30.
That these make the perfect gift for the book lover on any gift list almost goes without saying. What I like most about these is that you make an instant friend when you cross paths with someone who “gets it.” Best of all, each necklace purchased sends one book to a community in need.
