Ever since I stumbled across these classic & amazing letterheads on Letterheady (an interesting mix including John Denver, Frank Lloyd Wright, Gandhi, Houdini and Woody Harrelson, among many others), I’ve been slightly obsessed with the medium. After all, there was a time not so long ago when any professional lacking a letterhead was not a true professional. At their best, letterheads convey the personality of the writer nearly as well as the message itself.
But times changed, and letterheads vanished for a while, but as always, the pendulum swings back. Now, as companies and individuals seek to brand & differentiate themselves, letterheads may just be back in vogue. After all, the above Letterheady link features that of Lena Dunham.
Now the London-based MOO has recently launched a new Letterhead collection. The company rightly points out that letterheads set the mood, whether they’re bearing an invoice, a contract or a hastily scrawled note enclosed with them. To celebrate the launch, the company’s design team created sets of imaginary business cards and letterheads for 12 of history’s most famous communicators. The engaging designs included Illustrator Roald Dahl, Author Jane Austen and Scientist Albert Einstein, amongst others. They are so clever and the more you look, the more you notice.
I think my favorite is Charles Darwin — I like the idea of the animals being split. The company’s Dan Sharp told me the project was most beneficial in creating MOO’s line. “Designing creative brands for some of history’s biggest personalities helped us tighten the link between identity and design, inspiring others to use their personality to bring their brand, and business stationery, to life.”
