While in New York for National Stationery Show, unfortunately I did not make it to The Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the Charles James exhibition in its newly renovated Costume Institute (including the Anna Wintour Costume Center) — but I did make it to the Libretto Group booth to see their exquisite merchandise created for the exhibition.
The offerings transfer James’ sculptural, scientific, and mathematical approaches to ball gowns into luxe stationery form. My feeling is if I can’t have one of the frocks hanging in my closet, at least I can get some stationery depicting them, especially stationery that is just as carefully created as the apparel. Offerings include three journals and sets of folded notes.
The Ball Gowns Journal is hardbound and features antique bookbinding elements, graced with a timeless Cecil Beaton photograph of the designer’s ball gowns taken in 1948. It also features gilded page edges, hot-stamped end papers, an acetate tip-in with Antonio Lopez illustration and a pale blue satin ribbon page marker. $28, and everything is available here.
Next up we have the Ball Gowns Note cards, 12 folded notes with printed envelopes — perfect for correspondence with any well-dressed friend. Each envelope features a hot-stamped interior plus a gold reverse to each card. Posh! The box and an envelope are shown, $25.
The Evening Dresses Notebook is softbound and lays flat, graced with an Antonio Lopez illustration. The printed end papers feature subtle graining, and deep blue satin ribbon page marker keeps all those elegant thoughts in order. At $16.50, a real steal!
The Fashion Illustrations Notebook lays flat, and the front and back is printed with Antonio Lopez illustrations of the ball gowns in a sepia technique. The printed, textured end papers features spot UV varnish, and there’s a charcoal satin ribbon page marker. $13.50.
Last up we have 12 folded note cards featuring four different Antonio Lopez illustrations of the gowns. Again these feature a sepia technique, as well as printed envelopes with spot UV varnish. $18.
