Good morning! I am loving J.Falkner’s new spring range, and today I have a treat— Jason is sharing a bit about his creative process. Take it away, Jason!
As I’m sure any card maker will tell you, the question we get most often is this: Where did you get your ideas? There is a European proverb I love, which goes something like, “The appetite comes at the eating.” And this is true for me and ideas. Staring at a blank page is hard work, but getting out in the world — looking at cool shops, reading beautiful magazines (House Beautiful and Domino are current faves), visiting great exhibitions — and the ideas start to take shape. Even a new restaurant can speak to me about colors and patterns.
The Audrey Hepburn auction at Christies in London last summer was curated as beautifully as any museum show. But more than just her elegant life and great style was the sense of warmth and charm in her letters. It was this I wanted to convey — you know she would have been such a marvelous friend. And the blush pink just says “Audrey!” to me.When did Aperol Spritz suddenly take over as the drink of the summer? But hey, I’m not complaining — that peachy orange color just raises the spirits. It inspired this “Because you are amazing” card, one of my personal favorites. I send it to everyone I can think of — it works as a thank you, a congratulations, even for birthday. Just like the drink itself, I wanted this card to be a mood lifter. Here in Palm Beach we are surrounded by palm trees, and they’ve become a regular design motif for us. This time I was inspired by how rich the green looks against dark shadows, with fronds picked out in gold for a bit of extra luxe. [Editor’s note: I featured this beauty in the Spring issue of Stationery Trends, mailing now! See our digital issue here and find the card on page 54.]A trip to San Diego impressed me with that simple, breezy SoCal approach to design. I loved the palette of this table setting, with patinated copper utensils, and the pop of green in the succulent. Which led to this pistachio plaid thank you card with copper foil lettering. Thank you Jason for this great peek behind the cards. Meanwhile I am obsessed with ginghams this season, and trying to restrain myself from buying every frock I see! This version is so much more affordable.
