I first stumbled across this title months ago, in teNeues’ area of the Aesthetic Movement showroom at the winter Atlanta gift show — and was so excited when my very own copy arrived last Friday, just before the publication date of today!
Argentinean photographer Irina Werning’s Back to the Future is a fantastic voyage to the past through the present. She takes old pictures, and then mimics them years later with the subjects dressed, styled and posed exactly as they were in the original.
The results are fascinating and quirky; although you can’t stop time, the subjects’ spirits and personalities endure. By turns funny, strange and even a little dark, they are impossible to look away from. Werning is brilliant in the styling and recreations of each photograph’s setting, lighting and style. After taking in the initial impact of each duo, the more you study each image pair, the more you notice her exacting eye at work.
At 8×10 inches and 160 pages, the hardcover has some weight to it, and is beautifully printed and bound. With text in English, German, French and Spanish, it’s just waiting to sit on your coffee table and stir up comments from anyone who comes across it. $50. Order it here!
