We can all use a little happy — now more than ever — and new stationery + lifestyle brand Pattern Happy seeks to infuse our lives with much-needed good vibes. Full of fun and frolic, this is a true American-grown family business, founded by couple Kim and Ryan Sabel.
Kim is a self-taught graphic designer, who, while studying business in college, found herself needing a creative outlet. “I got into scrapbooking, and convinced my husband to start a company with me. Named KI Memories, we made and sold supplies for others like myself, who loved recording their stories. Within five years, our craft products were being sold in thousands of boutiques worldwide as well as Target, Michaels and JoAnn’s. In 2012, after 12 years in business, and having started a family, we decided to sell the company and focus on our family for a while. I knew I wanted to continue designing, though, and have been waiting for the right time to start something new again!”
That “something new” derived from one of Kim’s first loves: paper. “The common threads through my work have always been PATTERN and COLOR, and the stories they tell,” she told me. “So when we talked about starting another business, I knew I wanted to dive back into product design with those as my focus. I chose the name ‘Pattern Happy’ because designing patterns brings me joy, and I want to share that with others.”Kim chose stationery because she deeply values the handwritten note. “I’m sentimental and I recognize that a person’s handwriting is a part of them. I’m hopeful that our customers love adding their handwritten thoughts to our products, be it a greeting card, notepad or some future products we can’t speak of yet! It’s important to me that people enjoy actually using the things I make. I believe that will come from making a fresh, high quality and thoughtfully designed product line.” When designing new patterns —and products in general — Kim is most often inspired by a mood or a feel she gets from seeing a certain color palette or motif. “I want to reinterpret that feeling in a fresh way. It’s a visual conversation or story I’m telling.”Kim’s favorite new product is their Geofetti Gift Wrap. “There is so much to look at! It’s cheerful, hip and versatile — and shouts ‘Let’s party!'”
We all know that a thoughtful note from a friend can bring with it cheer, hope and love. The sheer joy of these offerings brings a little extra special something too.
This fresh, sunny range doesn’t look like anything else out there — to me, that’s a sign that it’s going places!
