While not traditionally humorous, there is something about Gianna Pergamo’s “human” animals that is quite funny — and engaging. The longer you look, the more detail and texture you notice within each image.
“I started making these images because I am really interested in children’s books and narrative imagery,” she told me. “I like creating images that tell a story — but not necessarily the whole story. Just enough so that the viewer has the ability to and desire to create their own story around the image. I think this makes the pictures more personal, and because of that, more funny.
“People who love my images usually find one that they relate to first, exclaiming something like, ‘That crocodile reminds me so much of so-and-so!’ before looking through more images and finding more connections. I think people are able to relate to animals and find themselves in animals very readily. It is so fun to dress them up and enhance the personality you can already see in their faces. I feel they themselves just lend themselves to being fancy.
“Often I start a piece with a particular animal in mind, or a feeling. Sometimes I just find an accessory and build the whole collage around it. Usually I work on several pieces at once so I can mix and match images, and sometimes switch whole elements based on how the piece is working. Right now I am working on a bunch of new cards and art prints based around my beauty-pug, Sophie, who is the light of my life.”
I can’t wait to see them, Gianna! In the meantime you can find these cards and many more here for $3.5o each. Many are available as art prints — and also in stuffed animal versions. Gianna also offers custom pet portraits starting at $150, the perfect gift for the pampered pet who already has everything.
